Does anyone use Gimp?? Help

Is anyone using "gimp" as their photo editing program? I don't use it but somebody asked me if they could change their digital photos into black and white with "gimp" and since I don't use it, I thought I'd ask somebody here.

Perhaps someone could suggest a free photo editing program that will do this?

I also don't know gimp, but "irfan view" is a free picture viewer with many options. It's really easy to chance color into greyscale (only one click). To resize a jpg it is neccessary to save the picture again with a new name and to open it again (this a hint, I needed some time to work with). Hope I could help.

Picassa allows you to change your photos to B&W and it's free.
Haven't used Gimp I'm afraid.
